Can AI Replace Therapy
What do you think??
There is a conversation happening right now. Can AI replace therapy?
I use AI myself. I’ve been using it to help me add more protein to my vegan diet. For strategy with work and for organizing my thoughts. It is a powerful tool and I am grateful for it. And I can also clearly see its limits.
Recently, when asking AI about protein, it started asking me questions about my body image. I knew immediately, that conversation belongs with a therapist, not a screen. There is a difference between tips and tools and the kind of support that requires a human being who is truly present with you.
I get that AI feels less vulnerable. I get that it’s available at 3am, always accessible, never judgmental. I understand that therapy isn’t always accessible or affordable.
But it is not a replacement for human connection.
The most powerful part of therapy is the relationship. A space built slowly and carefully on safety and trust. And that space is built not just through words, it’s built through presence.
Therapy is matching nervous systems and co-regulation. Person to person. When I am with a client who is overwhelmed or activated, something happens in that room. We breathe together and we pause together. My presence meets theirs with facial expressions and tone of voice. The way a body slowly settles when it finally feels safe. That is not a technique, it’s one human being offering themselves as an anchor for another.
AI cannot do that.
I think about the tender moments in my practice. When a client walks in stressed and overwhelmed, maybe I offer them a blanket to feel more comfortable. When tears come and I quietly hand them a tissue. When words feel impossible and we simply sit together in silence. When it feels right, asking if they’d like a hug at the end of a hard session… that moment of human contact anchors something deep: care, safety, and connection.
These are moments, together, that create lasting change.
If you are using AI for emotional support, I understand. Sometimes you need something at 3am and it is there. I get it. But transformation, the kind that builds real safety and lasting change happens in relationships.
And in a world already marked by vast loneliness and disconnection, the magic lives in the relationship.
I’m curious, what do you think? And how is AI showing up in your profession?
P.S This is my dog Shookie who comes to work with me, she's almost 17. She doesn't say much, but her presence is everything. My clients adore her!
